Can You See WhatsApp Last Seen if It Is Hidden?
If someone has hidden their last seen on WhatsApp, can you still find out when they were last online? Search results are full of tools that say yes. The honest answer is no: a hidden last seen is hidden from everyone, and no app, website or trick brings it back. What you can still see depends on exactly which setting the person chose, and this guide explains each one, what remains visible, and how to tell a real limit from a scam.
The short answer
No. When a person sets last seen to Nobody, WhatsApp stops sending that information to every other account, including yours and including any account a tracking tool uses. There is nothing left to read. Services that claim to reveal a hidden last seen are either guessing, showing invented numbers, or collecting your data.
What changes the picture is that hiding last seen does not always hide online status, and the two are easy to confuse. The rest of this guide is about that difference.
How the WhatsApp privacy settings work
Under Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online, there are two choices. Who can see my last seen offers Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except, and Nobody. Who can see when I am online offers Everyone or Same as last seen.
These combine in a few common ways. Last seen Everyone and online Everyone shows both to anyone. Last seen My contacts and online Same as last seen shows both only to saved contacts. Last seen Nobody with online Everyone hides the time of the last visit but still shows online while they are active. Last seen Nobody with online Same as last seen hides both completely.
What you can still see in each case
If online is still set to Everyone, you can see when they are online right now, even though their last seen time is hidden. A tracker that records online sessions as they happen can still build a timeline in this case, because it is capturing the live signal, not the hidden last seen.
If online is set to Same as last seen and last seen is Nobody, there is no presence signal at all. A tracker will show no activity, and that is the correct result. If you are not in their contacts and they limited visibility to My contacts, the same applies to you.
The reciprocity rule
WhatsApp is reciprocal here: if you hide your own last seen and online, you cannot see other people's. Many people who think a contact has hidden their last seen have actually hidden their own. Check Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online on your phone before drawing conclusions.
Other reasons last seen may not show
Blocking hides last seen and online from the blocked person. Some people never had last seen visible to begin with. Occasionally the label is just slow to update after a connection drop. And if you have never chatted with someone who limits visibility to contacts, you will not see it either.
Because several of these look identical from the outside, a missing last seen on its own does not tell you which one is happening. Be careful about reading too much into it.
How to spot a fake last seen tool
Warning signs include promises to show hidden last seen, to read messages, to see who someone chats with, or to work without linking any account. Tools that ask you to install software on the other person's phone, or for payment in gift cards or crypto with no clear company behind them, are also red flags.
A legitimate presence tracker is open about its limits. It needs your own linked WhatsApp account, it only sees what WhatsApp makes visible to that account, and it never touches message content.
What WP Tracker does and does not do
WP Tracker records the online and offline sessions WhatsApp shows to your linked account and turns them into a timeline and daily summary. If someone hides both last seen and online, WP Tracker shows no activity for them, because there is none to show. We would rather tell you that than invent data.
Only track people who know and agree to it, and follow the law where you live.
Step by step: check your own settings first
On Android, tap the three dots, then Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online. On iPhone, open the Settings tab, then Privacy, Last seen and online. You will see both choices: who can see my last seen, and who can see when I am online.
If either is set to Nobody, or online is set to Same as last seen while last seen is Nobody, WhatsApp will also hide other people's status from you. Changing it back to Everyone or My contacts restores what you can see, usually within a few moments.
It is worth doing this before assuming anything about the other person. A large share of 'they hid their last seen' cases turn out to be the reader's own setting.
Hidden or blocked: how to tell the difference
From the outside the two can look alike, because both remove last seen and online. A few signs point towards a block rather than a privacy setting: your messages stay at one grey tick for a long time, the profile photo has disappeared, and calls never ring through. With a privacy setting, messages still get delivered (two grey ticks) and the profile photo usually stays visible.
None of these signs is conclusive on its own, since profile photos also have their own privacy setting and phones can be switched off. Treat them as hints, not proof.
Why tools cannot get around it
Every way of seeing presence, including WhatsApp Web, linked devices and any third party tool, works through a WhatsApp account. WhatsApp applies the target's privacy settings before sending presence to any account, so a hidden status never leaves its servers. There is no secret channel a paid tool can use. When a site claims otherwise, the numbers it shows come from somewhere else, usually nowhere.
If you really need to know someone's activity
The honest route is to ask. If a family member or partner agrees that you can see when they are active, they can set their last seen and online to Everyone or My contacts, and a tracker can then build a timeline with their knowledge. This is how presence tracking is meant to be used: openly, with consent.
If someone has deliberately hidden their status, that is a clear signal about their wishes. Trying to work around it with apps that promise the impossible usually ends with a lost payment, leaked personal data, or both.
Myths about hidden last seen
Myth: changing your own settings to Nobody and back reveals theirs. It does not; you only see what their settings allow. Myth: WhatsApp Web shows hidden last seen. It follows exactly the same rules as the phone. Myth: a paid version of a tracker unlocks hidden status. No version can, because the data is never sent.
Frequently asked questions
- Can any app show a hidden WhatsApp last seen?
- No. When last seen is set to Nobody, WhatsApp does not share it with any account. Apps that claim otherwise are guessing or inventing data.
- If last seen is hidden, can I still see when they are online?
- Sometimes. If they left online visible to Everyone, you can still see when they are online right now. If online is set to Same as last seen, it is hidden too.
- Why can I not see anyone's last seen?
- Most often because you hid your own. WhatsApp only shows last seen and online to people who share theirs.
- Does hiding last seen also hide read receipts?
- No. Read receipts are a separate setting under Privacy. Someone can hide last seen and still show blue ticks, or the other way round.
- Can I see when they were last online if we are in a group together?
- No. Group chats do not reveal individual members' last seen or online status beyond what their privacy settings already allow.
Keep an online timeline instead of checking by hand
WP Tracker records when a number comes online and goes offline and turns it into a daily summary, right in your browser. Message content is never read.
