Get Notified When Someone Comes Online on WhatsApp

A common wish is a simple alert: tell me when this person comes online. WhatsApp does not offer that, and many apps that promise it are unreliable. This guide explains what WhatsApp gives you out of the box, why a live alert is harder than it sounds, and the practical alternative of following someone's online activity on a dashboard, where you can see it as it happens and look back at the whole day.

Does WhatsApp have an online notification?

No. WhatsApp has no built in setting that alerts you when a contact comes online. The closest you get is opening their chat and watching the header, which only works while you are looking.

Why instant alerts are tricky

Online sessions are often only a few seconds long. An alert for every one of them would be constant and mostly useless, and by the time you tap it the person may already be offline. Reliable push alerts also depend on your phone's notification rules and battery settings.

That is why the most useful view is usually not a stream of alerts but a record you can check: who came online, when, and for how long.

Follow activity on a live dashboard

WP Tracker shows each number's current status in a dashboard that updates as presence changes, alongside today's sessions. Open it whenever you like and you see whether someone is online now, when they last were, and how their day has gone so far.

We are open about this: WP Tracker does not currently send a push notification for every online session. It keeps the live status and the full history in the dashboard instead.

What you can see instead of an alert

Every online and offline session with its time, total time online today, number of visits, busiest hours, a weekly view and a likely sleep window. With two numbers, the compare view shows how much their online time overlapped.

Avoid apps that promise too much

Apps that promise instant alerts plus hidden last seen plus message reading are not telling the truth about at least one of those. Treat any service that claims to bypass WhatsApp privacy settings with suspicion.

Ways people try to get alerts, and the problems

Some people keep the chat open on a second phone or a tablet and watch the header. It works only while they are looking, drains battery and misses short visits. Others install apps from outside the official stores that promise alerts; many of these are spyware or adware, and some stop working without warning.

There are also browser extensions that watch WhatsApp Web for online changes. They only work while your computer and that tab stay open, and extensions with access to WhatsApp Web can read far more than presence. Be very careful about what you install.

Build a simple routine instead

For most people, checking a dashboard a few times a day answers the real question better than a stream of alerts. You see whether the person is online now, when they were last active, and the shape of their day so far: morning check, lunch break, busy evening, quiet night.

The weekly view then shows whether today was normal. That context is what an alert can never give you.

Using daily summaries

WP Tracker summarises each day into total time online, number of visits, busiest hour and likely sleep window. Looking at those numbers once a day is often more useful than knowing the exact second someone came online, because it shows trends: later nights, more frequent checks, or quieter weekends.

Privacy and consent

Alerts about someone's online activity are especially sensitive, because they allow very close monitoring. Only follow people who know about it and agree, and respect it if they change their mind and hide their status.

When an alert would actually matter

The situations where people most want to know someone came online are often about wellbeing: an elderly relative who usually checks WhatsApp in the morning, or a family member travelling. In those cases the important question is usually 'are they active as usual today?' rather than 'what second did they open the app?'.

A dashboard with today's sessions and the usual daily pattern answers that directly. If the morning check-in has not happened by the time it normally does, you can see it at a glance and simply call them.

What to look for each day

Open the dashboard and check three things: is the person online now, when were they last active, and does today's total look like their normal day. Then glance at the busiest hours. Changes that repeat over several days are meaningful; a single unusual day usually is not.

With two numbers, the compare view shows overlapping online time. Treat a high overlap as a hint, never as proof that two people are talking.

Setting expectations

No legitimate tool can alert you to activity that someone has hidden, show messages, or tell you who someone is talking to. A good tracker is clear about this from the start. If a service promises more, it is worth asking where that extra data would come from.

Track responsibly

Watching when someone comes online is personal. Only do it with their knowledge and agreement, and follow the law where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Can WhatsApp tell me when a contact comes online?
No. WhatsApp has no online alert. You can only see it by opening the chat, or by using a tool that records presence.
Does WP Tracker send push notifications?
Not for every session. It shows live status and the full history in your dashboard instead.
Can I get alerts for someone who hid their online status?
No. If online status is hidden, WhatsApp does not share it with any account, so there is nothing to alert on.
Why not just send an alert for every session?
Most sessions are a few seconds long. Alerts for each would be constant and usually arrive after the person has already gone offline.
Does WhatsApp show me that someone came online in the chat list?
No. The chat list never shows online status. It only appears in the header of an open chat.

Keep an online timeline instead of checking by hand

WP Tracker records when a number comes online and goes offline and turns it into a daily summary, right in your browser. Message content is never read.
