How to Know if Someone Is Online on WhatsApp

You want to know whether someone is online on WhatsApp right now, ideally without opening the chat and leaving a trace. It is one of the most searched questions about the app, and the honest answer has several parts: what online actually means, where WhatsApp shows it, why it sometimes is not there, and how a web tool can keep a timeline for you so you do not have to keep checking. This guide walks through all of it, including the limits that no app can get around.

What online means on WhatsApp

On WhatsApp, online means the person has the app open in the foreground and connected to the internet at this moment. It is a live presence signal. It is not a message, it is not a read receipt, and it does not say who they are talking to. The moment they leave the app, lock the phone or lose connection, the label disappears and their activity turns into last seen, which is the time they were most recently online.

Online is also shown while someone has WhatsApp Web or the desktop app open and active. A notification arriving in the background does not make someone online, and neither does a message being delivered to their phone. That is why a person can receive your message (two grey ticks) without ever appearing online.

Because the signal is live, it is short lived. Many people open WhatsApp for a few seconds at a time, so online often flickers on and off. Watching one chat header by hand, you will miss most of those short visits.

Where WhatsApp shows online status

Inside the app, online appears under the contact's name at the top of a one to one chat. If they are typing or recording a voice note, that replaces online for as long as they are doing it. There is no list view of who is online, and group chats do not show the online status of individual members in the header.

That means the only built in way to check is to open each conversation and look at the top. If you open a chat that has unread messages from them, those messages are marked as read, and if both of you have read receipts on, they will see blue ticks. Opening a chat with no unread messages does not notify the other person.

Why you sometimes cannot see it

WhatsApp gives everyone two related privacy controls under Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online. The first decides who can see last seen: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except, or Nobody. The second decides who can see when they are online: Everyone, or Same as last seen. If someone sets online to Same as last seen and last seen to Nobody, nobody can see when they are online.

The rule is also reciprocal. If you hide your own last seen and online, you cannot see other people's either. So if online never appears for anyone, check your own settings first.

Online also will not show if the person has blocked you, or if they are a number you have never interacted with and their settings limit visibility to contacts. None of this is a bug, and no tool can override it.

Checking without opening every chat

If you want to follow someone's activity over a day or a week, checking the chat header by hand does not work well. You will miss short sessions, you cannot see patterns, and you keep opening the chat. A presence tracker solves this by watching the online signal continuously and writing each change down with a time stamp.

WP Tracker does this from your browser. You link your own WhatsApp account the same way you link WhatsApp Web, add the numbers you want to follow, and the dashboard fills with online and offline sessions as they happen. Nothing is installed on the other person's phone, and there is no app to download on either side.

What a timeline shows that a glance cannot

A single glance tells you online or not online. A timeline tells you much more: how many times someone opened WhatsApp today, how long each visit lasted, their busiest hours, and roughly when they go to sleep and wake up. WP Tracker turns those sessions into a daily summary and a weekly view so the pattern is easy to read.

If you follow two numbers, the compare view lines up both timelines and shows how much they overlap. Overlap is a probability from timing, not proof that two people are talking to each other. Plenty of people are simply online at the same busy hours.

What you cannot see, whatever tool you use

You cannot read anyone's messages, see who they are chatting with, or see their location. WhatsApp chats are end to end encrypted and presence data contains none of that. Any service that claims to show messages or contacts is not being honest and may be trying to take your data or money.

You also cannot see a last seen or online status that the person has hidden. If they switch visibility to Nobody, it is hidden from every account, including the one a tracker uses.

Tips for more reliable results

Share your own last seen and online, because of the reciprocity rule above. Keep your linked WhatsApp account active, since the tracker sees presence through it. A recent conversation with the number also helps, as WhatsApp delivers presence most reliably for people you actually message.

Give it a few days. One day of data is noisy. After a week, the daily summary and the busiest hours become a much more accurate picture of someone's routine.

Phone, WhatsApp Web and desktop

Online looks the same no matter where the person uses WhatsApp. A session on the phone, on WhatsApp Web in a browser, or in the desktop app all show as online in the chat header and all end the same way, when the app is closed, put in the background or disconnected.

One practical difference: people who work with WhatsApp Web open all day can look online for long stretches while they are actually doing something else in another tab or window. On a timeline this shows up as unusually long sessions during working hours, which is worth keeping in mind before reading too much into it.

Common ways people misread online status

Seeing someone online right after you sent a message does not mean they are ignoring you; they may be replying to someone else or reading an older chat. Seeing two people online at the same moment does not mean they are talking to each other. And not seeing someone online for a whole day does not prove they did not use WhatsApp; they may have hidden their status or you may have hidden yours.

The safest way to read presence is as a pattern over several days, not as single moments.

Track responsibly

Online status is personal information. Only track people who know about it and agree, such as a family member who asked you to look out for them or a partner who consents, and follow the law where you live. Secretly monitoring someone can be illegal and harmful.

Tracking presence over time is a Premium feature because it needs your linked account and a continuous timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Does opening a chat tell the other person I checked?
Only through read receipts. If the chat has unread messages from them and both of you have read receipts on, they will see blue ticks. Opening a chat with nothing unread does not notify them.
Does WhatsApp Web count as being online?
Yes. While WhatsApp Web or the desktop app is open and active, the person shows as online, just like on the phone.
Can I see if someone is online if they blocked me?
No. Blocking hides online status and last seen from the blocked account, and no tool can change that.
Will the person know I am tracking them?
WhatsApp does not notify anyone that their status is being watched. That is exactly why consent matters: only track people who have agreed to it.
Can I see when someone was online yesterday?
Not inside WhatsApp. It only shows the current online label and the single most recent last seen. A timeline from a tracker is the only way to look back at earlier sessions.

Keep an online timeline instead of checking by hand

WP Tracker records when a number comes online and goes offline and turns it into a daily summary, right in your browser. Message content is never read.
